Advice

Post by admin »

Dear FA Forum users

Just a word or two about giving advice.

We try not to give advice on this forum.

Most of us have received mountains of advice and guidance from well-meaning friends and family, but did any of it help?
Unless people have had experience of living with an addict, they really have no idea. It is so immensely difficult and others just can't understand.

On this forum we do understand what it's like, and we understand the difficult decisions that some of us may have to make as a result of another's drug abuse. Taking such decisions can take a lot of courage, and none of us know really what is best for another person.
In this fellowship and on this forum we take responsibility for our own choices and try not to offer advice to others about theirs.

We can offer love, warmth, encouragement, identification, empathy and understanding, and by sharing our own experiences, and our recovery, we offer hope to others to find the courage they need to find a way through.

It can take a long time before we slowly slowly start to reason what's best for us rather than what's best for another person.
Gradually by baby steps, we can turn the focus off another person onto ourselves. We all do this in our own time, in our own way.

The only suggested 'advice' you'll find here is, get to a meeting, call the helpline, get a sponsor, give service, read the FA literature.
